Barn Plans and Farm Building Plans from The University of Tennessee Extension Service

The University of Tennessee Extension maintains a file of approximately 290 building and equipment plans. Large scale printed plans are available by mail to residents of the state of Tennessee, but reduced, 8 1/2"x11" instant-download plans are free, online, for everyone.

The free plans include twelve horse barns from a 16'x24' two-stall to a 48'x98' design with an indoor exercise area. There's a 60'x140' riding arena and a variety of structures for livestock and small animals. The list of General Barns and Utility Sheds includes twenty three designs of pole barns, garages, equipment shelters, tool sheds, storage sheds and other practical outbuildings.

About These Cooperative Extension Plans:  These plans were developed over many years by engineers at U.S. Land Grant universities. They are generally older plans that need to be revised for today's construction methods, codes and standards. They provide design ideas and conceptual information for planning purposes. The plans were prepared through the USDA Cooperative Farm Buildings Plan Exchange.

Buildings must resist various forces from snow, wind, earthquake and use. They also must adhere to local building and zoning codes. A local building inspector, engineer, building supplier, or building contractor can help you determine what is a safe and legal building for your area.
