Build Popular Mechanic's Pressure-Treated And Composite Deck

Building a deck is the most efficient and cost-effective way to expand your living space and create an inviting outdoor oasis. It also happens to be one of the most popular of all do-it-yourself home improvement projects. The challenge is to find a deck design that's relatively simple to build, yet stylish and architecturally interesting. It must also be spacious and accommodating, and able to fit comfortably within the confines of your backyard and budget.

With those criteria in mind, we present this attractive deck that will provide 400 sq. ft. of outdoor living space on two distinct areas. The rectangular main deck measures about 12 ft. wide x 20 ft. long. On the left side, it drops down one step to a 12-ft.-wide octagonal platform perfectly sized to accommodate a dining table and chairs. To the right, a staircase leads down to the lawn.

Double Decker: A Bi-Level Porch and Deck  This bi-level design has two great retreats for the price of one--almost.

This elevated porch was designed for a house with a full-height walk-out basement. This yielded a traditional covered porch on top and a covered play area for the kids below. But the same construction techniques apply if you want to build the porch at grade level. All you have to do is shorten the posts.

Build A Backyard Pool Deck  New techniques to get the job done quick.

It's easy to see why above-ground pools are so popular: They're affordable, quick and easy to install and require minimal maintenance. However, to get the most enjoyment out of your above-ground pool you need a wood deck that surrounds it. Not only will you never again have to climb a pool ladder, but a deck will also create a fun-in-the-sun gathering place for family and friends. It gives you a place to swim, sunbathe, dine at poolside or just visit.
